ASVAB Prep

Your ASVAB Score Unlocks Better Jobs & Bigger Bonuses

The ASVAB is not an IQ test — it measures what you already know and can be prepared for. A higher score opens more career fields and larger enlistment bonuses.

📋 What Is the ASVAB?

The Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) is a multiple-choice test taken before enlistment. It measures knowledge in math, science, reading, mechanical, and electronics areas. It takes about 3 hours and is free to take at a MEPS (Military Entrance Processing Station) or your recruiter’s office.

🎯 What Score Do You Need?

The minimum AFQT (qualifying) score varies by branch: Army & Marines: 31, Navy: 35, Air Force & Coast Guard: 36, Space Force: 50. However, the higher you score, the more job options open up — especially high-bonus technical fields that require composite scores of 90+.

📚 How to Prep for Free

Three free resources recommended by recruiters: March2Success.com (Army-sponsored, completely free), Khan Academy (math and reading fundamentals), and the ASVAB for Dummies study guide (available at most libraries). Most test-takers improve 10–15 points with just 2 weeks of focused prep.

AFQT Score Range Category What It Opens
93–99 Category I (Top) All jobs in all branches; maximum bonus eligibility; officer candidate consideration
65–92 Category II Nearly all jobs; most technical and cyber fields; strong bonus eligibility
50–64 Category IIIA Most jobs; some technical fields; Space Force minimum; good bonus access
31–49 Category IIIB–IVA Army, Navy, Marine, AF, CG eligible; limited to general jobs; fewer bonus options
Below 31 Category IV–V Not eligible for enlistment; retake after 30-day wait period

FAQ

Military Enlistment Questions Answered

Yes — all 6 branches allow enlisted service without a college degree. You need a high school diploma or GED (some branches require a diploma rather than a GED for the best job options). Officer positions generally require a 4-year college degree, but the enlisted ranks — which make up the vast majority of military personnel — do not. The military provides free, world-class vocational and technical training as part of your enlistment.
Enlistment bonuses range from $0 to $50,000 depending on the branch, job (MOS/rate/AFSC), contract length, and current needs of the service. High-demand technical fields like Navy Nuclear, Army Combat Medic, and Navy Hospital Corpsman currently offer the largest bonuses. Bonuses are typically paid in installments — a portion at graduation from training (AIT/A-School) and the remainder over your contract. Always get the bonus details in writing before signing.
The ASVAB (Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery) is a standardized test measuring your knowledge in areas like math, reading, science, mechanical reasoning, and electronics. Your AFQT score determines eligibility: Army and Marines require a minimum 31, Navy requires 35, Air Force and Coast Guard require 36, and Space Force requires 50. Higher scores unlock better jobs and bigger bonuses — most high-bonus technical MOSs require composite scores of 90+. The test is free and you can retake it after a 30-day waiting period.
Enlisted service members (E-1 through E-9) make up about 84% of the military and are the hands-on workforce — they operate equipment, perform medical procedures, write code, drive vehicles, and conduct combat operations. Officers (O-1 through O-10) lead and manage enlisted personnel and generally require a 4-year college degree. Most people who enlist without a degree start as enlisted — and many later commission as officers after earning a degree through Tuition Assistance or the GI Bill while serving.
All 6 branches receive the same federal pay scale (basic pay by rank and time in service), full healthcare and dental coverage through TRICARE, housing allowance (BAH), food allowance (BAS), 30 days of paid vacation per year, and the full GI Bill for education after service. Differences lie in base quality, deployment frequency, lifestyle, and specialty pay. The Air Force is known for best base housing quality; the Navy has the most at-sea time; the Marines have the most intense culture.
The fastest way is to enter your ZIP code in the search box at the top of this page — it will search for local recruiters across all branches. You can also visit each branch’s official recruiter locator: goarmy.com for Army, navy.com for Navy, airforce.com for Air Force, marines.com for Marines, gocoastguard.com for Coast Guard, and spaceforce.com for Space Force. Recruiters are free, there is no obligation, and their job is to answer your questions and walk you through your options — including available bonuses for your area and qualifications.
